Rather than being a timeless hymn, “Who Can Say” is an original song written by yours truly, Elizabeth Rose. This song was a work in progress for several years before I finally recorded a simple version in October 2018 as a way to remember the new changes that had been made. It came to mind to share the recording with my producer, Brant Fricker, with a simple note saying, “Hey, check out the song I’ve been working on.”
When you read the words “just as I am”, what comes to mind? When I think of this phrase it puts me into a mindset of being in the moment, simply being, not trying to change anything or be good enough. It is a little bit of a “get out of jail free” card when I’m consumed in self-judgement and feeling like I’m not enough.
… Can you imagine everything in your life going well? You’re happily married, have a beautiful family, an adoring spouse and five healthy children, you’re at the pinnacle of your career, and you’ve successfully provided more than enough for all your family’s needs. Under these circumstances it would be very easy to say, ‘it is well with my soul.’
The lyrics of Who Can Say are a call and response to the goodness of God and His interaction with humanity and the universe around us. As we dive in to look at the questions asked in each verse, the answers can easily be found in scripture. The best way to go about studying the biblical truths in this song is by connecting the lyrics to the scripture that contextually correlates to what Elizabeth Rose intended for each phrase.
